On Cloudsurfer 3 review: On's softest daily cruiser yet

The debut of On's new Surreal superfoam turns the Cloudsurfer into its softest shoe to date: a smooth, rolling cruiser for easy and recovery miles. Here's the scoop on the ride, and the trade.

On Cloudsurfer 3 review

Every brand eventually builds the shoe its foam lab has been promising, and for On, this is it. The Cloudsurfer 3 is the first shoe to carry Surreal, the new superfoam developed at On Labs Zurich, and On calls it their softest run yet.

The package around it is a $160 neutral everyday trainer with a 45mm heel / 37mm forefoot stack, a re-engineered CloudTec Phase midsole where the cloud elements compress in sequence, and a plusher barely breathable Evolved Warp Knit upper.

Having put real miles into it, my take is clear; this is a very soft cruiser for slower-paced recovery miles and daily training, and the Cloudsurfer line has now fully committed to that relaxed brief. It's also heavier than the shoe it replaces, and that trade shapes who should buy it.

I have been testing the On Cloudsurfer 3 through easy days, recovery runs, and relaxed long efforts, and here's my full review.

Answer 5 quick questions and get matched to the best running shoe for your training style, ride preference, and foot shape. Updated to v5.5 May 2026

Key specifications

  • Price: $160 at On
  • Weight: 10.5oz (298g) in my tested men's US 9
  • Drop: 8mm | Stack height: 45mm heel / 37mm forefoot
  • Upper: Evolved Warp Knit: an adaptive engineered mesh with a plush padded collar and a relatively stiff heel counter
  • Midsole: New Surreal superfoam with re-engineered CloudTec Phase geometry, where the cloud elements compress in sequence; no plate
  • Outsole: More rubber coverage than previous Cloudsurfers
  • Extra attributes: Wider base with raised foam sidewalls; the first shoe to carry Surreal, which will roll out across On's running range soon

Sizing and fit

True to size for me, with a very high step-in comfort lever: the knit upper is accommodating through the midfoot and toe box (good news for wider feet) with a small taper, and the stretch plus lacing lets narrower feet dial in their hold.

The heel counter is fairly stiff under generous collar padding, but excellent lockdown is very easily achieved.

Performance review

A shoe that claims "softest yet" invites one question; did the softness cost the run? Here's how the Cloudsurfer 3 answers it.

Genuinely soft, and genuinely new foam

The softness upgrade over the Cloudsurfer 2 is real and immediately noticeable: deeper, more protective cushioning under both the heel and forefoot, where the 2 ran firmer and denser.

Surreal is the story. On bills it as lighter, softer, and more responsive than the Helion it replaces, and underfoot that translates to a protective, low-fatigue softness that stays soft rather than firming up when you press the pace.

The bounce is improved over Helion too, though calibrate expectations because this is cushioned-soft, not race-shoe responsive-snappy, and it's a touch firmer than the marketing's soft-meets-bounce language might suggest.

For the easy and recovery miles it's aimed at, that balance lands just right.

The sequential CloudTec roll is the signature

What separates this from a generic slab of superfoam is the re-engineered CloudTec Phase geometry.

The cloud elements are computer-optimized to compress one after another as your foot moves, so each step rolls smoothly into the next.

On's own lab simulations put numbers on it; integrating the geometry into Surreal yields 15.5% more compression than the foam alone, and a 9.9% reduction in peak braking force.

On the road, that's the sensation that defines the shoe as a smooth, continuous, rolling ride that makes relaxed paces feel genuinely low-effort.

The Cloudsurfer has chosen its lane

Zoom out across three generations and the direction is unmistakable.

The original Cloudsurfer was a lower, flexible fun runner, the 2 was firmer and more structured for mixed paces, and the 3 is taller, softer, more padded, and heavier, with the drop trending down from 10mm to 8mm along the way.

I read that as intentional, not accidental. On has turned the Cloudsurfer into its dedicated relaxed trainer.

That's worth knowing if you loved the 2's firmer, more versatile character, because this is a different shoe in spirit, and a better one if easy-mile comfort is what you're buying.

The weight is the trade, so keep it easy

At 10.5oz (298g) in my US 9, the Cloudsurfer 3 is heavier than the Cloudsurfers before it and heavier than some rival daily trainers, and you do feel it when you try to push the pace.

Easy runs, recovery days, and relaxed long efforts are where it shines, and it will hold steady efforts for plenty of runners.

But it's less eager the moment things get quick, and it's not the shoe for tempo work or intervals; if you want one high-stack On that can also go fast, the Cloudmonster 3 Hyper is that shoe.

High stack, smooth rocker, and a fresh-legs ride that works best for big weekly mileage and marathon training blocks.

Buy the Cloudsurfer 3 as your easy-day specialist and the weight barely registers, because the rolling ride carries it well at the paces it's built for.

Stable, durable, and fairly priced

Tall and soft usually invites wobble/instability, but the Cloudsurfer 3 manages to avoid it.

The wider base and raised foam sidewalls make this one of the most stable Cloudsurfers yet, keeping the platform predictable even on tired legs.

Early durability signals are positive too, helped by more outsole rubber than previous generations.

And at $160, holding the prior generation's price while debuting a brand-new superfoam, it's solid value for a premium daily cruiser.

My verdict

The Cloudsurfer 3 delivers exactly what On promised; the softest, smoothest-rolling Cloudsurfer to date, and a genuinely enjoyable cruiser for easy miles, recovery runs, and relaxed long efforts.

Buy it knowing its lane. The generational shift toward a heavier, more relaxed trainer is real; this isn't a do-it-all daily trainer for those who like to push the pace, and faster sessions deserve a different shoe in your rotation.

Who should look elsewhere: anyone wanting one shoe for every pace (the Cloudmonster 3 Hyper above fits that brief), runners who need stability features (that's the On Cloudrunner 3), and anyone wanting On's biggest, plushest platform (the Cloudsurfer Max remains that shoe).

If your easy days deserve their own shoe, the Cloudsurfer 3 gives them On's softest, smoothest ride yet for a fair $160, and that's an easy recommendation.

One buying note: the Cloudsurfer 3 launched October 2026 exclusively through specialist running retailers, with the full global rollout (including On.com) following in early 2027, so stock lives at run specialty first.
