If you’re deciding between the Brooks Ghost 17 and the Brooks Glycerin 22, you’re probably looking for a solid daily trainer with reliable cushioning, comfort, and a smooth ride.

I’ve tested both shoes extensively, on easy runs, longer efforts, and daily wear, and while they seem similar on the surface, they offer very different experiences on the run.
Here’s how they stack up, and which one might suit your running style and fit preferences better.

Sizing and fit

Ghost 17 (left), Glycerin 22 (right)
- The Ghost 17 fits true to size with a secure midfoot and heel lockdown, but leans slightly narrow—if you have wide feet, definitely grab one of the wide width options.
- The Glycerin 22 also fits true to size, but the midfoot is tighter, which I noticed during longer runs. That area could feel restrictive if you have a high instep or prefer a roomier fit.

The collars and padding are plush in both, but the Glycerin 22 takes the edge on comfort thanks to its pillowy heel counter and tongue.
Performance comparison
Cushioning and ride feel
- The Ghost 17 strikes an excellent balance between softness and energy return. The nitrogen-infused DNA Loft v3 foam feels more lively and responsive, especially during transitions.
- The Glycerin 22 is softer in the heel, making it well-suited for heel strikers, but it lacks the same pop during toe-off. It feels heavier and more muted overall.

I found the Ghost 17 more versatile for a variety of runs, while the Glycerin 22 is better for easy paces or walk/run combinations.
Stability and platform
While both are neutral shoes, the Glycerin 22 feels a bit more stable underfoot, likely due to its dual-density midsole design and wider base.
That said, the Ghost 17 transitions better thanks to the updated crash pad and added foam under the forefoot.
Breathability and upper feel

- The Ghost 17 upper feels more structured, but still breathable enough for moderate temps. I didn’t notice any hot spots or overheating during testing.
- The Glycerin 22 has a plusher, more padded upper, but it runs a bit warm, and the fit through the midfoot may be too snug for some.
If comfort around the collar is a top priority, go with the Glycerin. If you want more airflow and better lockdown for faster runs, the Ghost 17 edges ahead.
Durability and outsole grip

Ghost (left), Glycerin (right)
- Both shoes have durable outsoles with full rubber coverage, but the Ghost’s segmented crash pad flexes more naturally and adapts better on uneven surfaces like light gravel or wet pavement.
- The Glycerin’s outsole is sturdy and built to last, but it feels less nimble.

My verdict
The Brooks Ghost 17 continues to be one of the best all-round daily trainers in the Brooks lineup. It’s not flashy, but that’s kind of the point, it gets out of the way and lets you just enjoy your run.
The updated foam and lower drop make it smoother and more fun to run in than past versions, and it handles everything from recovery miles to moderate workouts really well.
The Brooks Glycerin 22 brings a lot of comfort to the table, particularly for runners who prefer a plusher, softer shoe and tend to land on their heels. It’s great for those slower efforts and longer miles where comfort matters more than pace.
For me, the Ghost 17 is the more versatile shoe, but the Glycerin 22 could be a great companion if you want a second pair focused on easy runs or high-mileage comfort.
