You'd think running watch shopping should be simple, but then you start researching and it turns into a mental spreadsheet: battery claims, GPS modes, training metrics, and suddenly you’re staring at $600+ watches for runs you mostly do from your front door.
So I’m keeping this list tight. If you’re trying to find the best running watch under $250, these are the three I point most runners to first.

At this price, I’m not looking for flashy smartwatch features. I want the fundamentals nailed, because that’s what actually supports run training:
- GPS that’s steady enough to trust for pacing workouts
- Battery life that fits a normal training week without worrying about it dying prematurely
- A screen that’s easy to read at effort, indoors and out
- Wrist HR that’s solid enough for most days (and plays nicely with a dedicated HR monitor if you want one)
- An app that makes post-run activity review feel straightforward and enjoyable to dive into
- 5ATM / 50m water resistance so heavy rain, or swimming with your watch is a non-event
If a watch does those well, the extras are a bonus. If it doesn’t, the extras don’t matter.
My quick picks
- COROS PACE 4
- Suunto Run
- Garmin Forerunner 165
This is basically the best running watch on a budget shortlist, there are other good ones out there, but these have performed great for me in testing.
Now, let me explain what each one is capable of, and why I rate them so highly.
